Bamberg, Yukarı Franken’da yer alan küçük bir Alman şehridir ve aynı zamanda 200.000 nüfuslu bir metropol bölgesinin ve Yukarı Franken’in en önemli merkezidir. Regnitz nehri üzerinde kurulmuştur ve Unesco Dünya Miras listesinde yer alan harika mimarisiyle dikkat çekmektedir. 1007 yılında İmparator II. Heinrich tarafından Piskoposluk Merkezi olarak kurulan Bamberg, Kutsal Roma İmparatorluğu için önemli merkezlerden biridir. Bamberg Katedrali’nde mezarı bulunan Papa II. Clemens, Alpler’in kuzeyinde mezarı olan tek Papadır. Bazı kaynaklarda İkinci bir Roma olarak da adlandırılan Bamberg’in, o dönem için ne kadar önemli bir merkez olduğu Papanın mezarından da anlaşılabilir.
Bamberg, Piskoposluk Kasabası, Ada Kasabası ve Pazardaki Bahçıvan Bölgesi olmak üzere üç bölgeye ayrılmıştır ve her biri UNESCO Dünya Mirası Listesi’nde yer almaktadır. Ayrıca, 7 tepe üzerine kurulmuş olması Franconian Rome olarak adlandırılmasının bir diğer sebebidir. Bamberg Katedrali, tam adıyla Bamberger Dom St. Peter und St. George, ilk olarak 1002 yılında Kral II. Henrich tarafından yaptırılmıştır ve bu katedral yanında 1200’lerde ikinci bir katedral inşa edilmiştir. Bugün görülen yapı 13. yüzyılda tamamlanmış ve romanesk mimari üslubuyla yapılmıştır. Şehrin pek çok noktasından görülebilen ihtişamlı 4 kulesiyle bir zamanlar başpiskopusun evi olan Bamberger Dom, Domplatz’da yani Katedral Meydanı’nda görmeniz gereken bir yerdir. Neue Residenz ise 1697-1703 yılları arasında inşa edilmiş ve 1703-1802 yılları arasında psikoposluk sarayı olarak hizmet vermiştir. Katedral Meydanı’na adeta bir çift kanat gibi inşa edilmiştir.
