The Historic Peninsula: Drama and Modesty
Let’s start with the heart of the city: Sultanahmet. Here, we are surrounded by the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, and the Topkapi Palace. These are structures of immense grandeur and history.
For this location, “epic” is the keyword.
For the Ladies:
This is the place for drama. Long, flowing dresses work exceptionally well here. When you ask what to wear for photoshoot sessions in the historic district, I always recommend maxi dresses with a lot of fabric in the skirt. Why? because when you spin in the courtyard of a mosque, or when the wind catches your dress near the obelisks, the effect is cinematic. Honeymoon Shoots
However, respect is key here. While we shoot mostly outside, the vibe is conservative and spiritual. A colorful dress Istanbul style often means deep, rich tones rather than bright neons. Think emerald green, ruby red, or a deep royal blue. These jewel tones pop incredibly well against the beige and grey stones of the mosques.

Ditch the shorts. In the historic peninsula, a well-fitted linen suit in beige, light blue, or light grey looks phenomenal. For a more casual, lifestyle shoot along the water, think “nautical chic.” A striped boat-neck top, high-waisted wide-leg trousers, and a straw hat can create a magazine-editorial look that feels effortless. This is perfect for couples who want photos that look candid and relaxed, rather than posed and formal.
Galata and Beyoğlu: Urban, Retro, and Edgy
Now we climb the hill to my favorite playground: Beyoğlu and the Galata Tower surroundings. This is the texture of the late 19th century—Art Nouveau buildings, narrow cobblestone streets, graffiti, vintage trams, and buzzing cafes. Honeymoon Shoots
Street Style Elegance:
Here, you can take risks. The Istanbul style guide for Galata is “Retro Cool.”
A midi-skirt with a vintage cut, a stylish blazer, or even a jumpsuit fits perfectly here. You can incorporate more patterns here—polka dots or subtle florals work well against the grit of the city walls.
Footwear Warning!
I cannot stress this enough: High heels are a nightmare on Istanbul’s cobblestones. If you want to wear stilettos for the photo, bring them in a bag and wear comfortable flats while walking between locations. I have seen too many shoots cut short because of twisted ankles. For a Galata shoot, stylish loafers, block heels, or even clean, white sneakers can look incredibly cool and modern.
Accessories:

Balat: The Explosion of Color
If you want a colorful dress Istanbul experience, Balat is the canvas. This neighborhood is famous for its rainbow-colored houses and steep streets.
Contrast is King:
Because the background is so busy and colorful, you have two options:

The Rooftop Shoots: The Flying Dress
You have seen them on Instagram. The famous rooftop shoots with the seagulls and the entire city spread out behind you. Many clients ask specifically for this.
For these shots, we are often renting or styling specifically for the “Flying Dress” effect. These are usually satin dresses with incredibly long trains (sometimes 3-4 meters). They are designed to catch the wind (or be tossed by an assistant). Honeymoon Shoots
What to wear for photoshoot on a rooftop? Solid, bright colors are non-negotiable here. Bright Red, Canary Yellow, or Hot Pink. Why? Because you are competing with the grey sky, blue sea, and brown roofs. You need a color that cuts through the haze and demands attention. This is not the place for subtle prints. It is high-fashion drama.
Seasonal Considerations: Winter vs. Summer
Istanbul is beautiful 365 days a year, but your wardrobe must adapt.
Summer (June – September):
It gets hot and humid. Synthetic fabrics will make you sweat and stick to your body, which does not look good in high-resolution close-ups. Stick to linen, cotton, and high-quality silk. Bring blotting paper for your face. Honeymoon Shoots

Spring/Autumn (April-May & October-November):

Winter (December – March):
Don’t try to brave the cold in a thin dress—you will look miserable in the photos. Embrace the winter fashion! A high-quality wool coat, a stylish scarf, and leather gloves create a romantic, cozy “Love Story” vibe. Think of the movie Serendipity. Walking hand in hand under an umbrella in the rain can be the most romantic photo of your life.
Fabric Psychology: What the Camera Loves
As a photographer, I look at how light interacts with fabric.
- Velvet: Absorbs light. Looks rich and regal, great for winter evening shoots in Pera.
- Satin/Silk: Reflects light. Highlights curves and movement. Perfect for golden hour. Honeymoon Shoots
- Lace: Adds texture and depth without adding bulk. Very bridal and romantic.
- Tulle: Creates a dreamlike, hazy quality. Great for fairy-tale concepts.
What to Avoid:
- Tiny, busy patterns: Small checkered patterns or tight pinstripes can create a “moiré effect” (a weird wavy look) in digital cameras.
- Big Logos: Please, no giant brand logos across your chest. It dates the photo and makes you look like a billboard. We want the focus on your emotions, not a fashion brand.
- Wrinkled Linen: I love linen, but if you pack it in a suitcase, steam it before the shoot. Photoshop can fix a lot, but ironing an entire shirt digitally is not ideal!
For the Grooms: You Matter Too!
I often see the bride looking like a goddess and the groom looking like he just finished a business meeting or came from the gym.

- Fit is everything. A cheap suit that fits perfectly looks better than a tailored Armani that is two sizes too big.
- Coordinate, don’t match. You don’t need to wear a tie that matches her dress exactly. That looks like a prom photo from 2005. Instead, find complementary colors. If she wears a warm floral dress, wear a warm brown jacket. If she wears cool blues, go for a grey or charcoal suit.
- Accessories: A nice watch, a pocket square, or good sunglasses add personality.
Hair and Makeup: The Istanbul Factor
The “Istanbul Look” is natural glam. Heavy, caked-on makeup can look harsh in the bright Mediterranean sun.

- Makeup: Matte foundations are generally better because of the humidity. A bold lip color (red or berry) looks fantastic in photos because it draws the eye to your smile.

The most beautiful outfit you can wear is your confidence. I have shot couples in simple jeans and t-shirts who looked like movie stars because they felt comfortable, and I have shot couples in couture gowns who looked stiff because they were terrified of the fabric.
Choose elegant photoshoot clothes that make you feel like the best version of yourself. If you hate dresses, wear a sleek power suit. If you hate suits, wear a clean, dark turtleneck. Benim fotoğrafçılık tarzım büyük ölçüde doğal ışığa ve çevrenin dokusuna dayanır. Bu nedenle seçtiğiniz kumaşlar, renkler kadar önemlidir. Tarihi Yarımada: Dram ve Zarafet
Şehrin kalbiyle başlayalım: Sultanahmet. Burada Mavi Camii, Ayasofya ve Topkapı Sarayı ile çevriliyiz. Bunlar muazzam bir ihtişam ve tarih taşıyan yapılar. Bu bölge için anahtar kelimemiz: “Destansı.”
Kadınlar İçin:
Burası dramatik bir stilin tam yeridir. Uzun, uçuşan elbiseler burada olağanüstü sonuçlar verir. Tarihi bölgedeki seanslar için ne giymeli diye sorulduğunda, her zaman eteğinde bolca kumaş olan maksi elbiseleri öneririm. Neden mi? Çünkü bir caminin avlusunda kendi etrafınızda döndüğünüzde veya dikili taşların yanında rüzgar elbisenizi yakaladığında, ortaya çıkan etki tamamen sinematiktir. Honeymoon Shoots
Ancak buradaki en önemli kural saygıdır. Çoğunlukla dışarıda çekim yapsak da atmosfer muhafazakar ve manevidir. Renkli İstanbul elbise stili burada parlak neonlar yerine derin ve zengin tonlar anlamına gelir. Zümrüt yeşili, yakut kırmızısı veya derin bir saks mavisi düşünün. Bu mücevher tonları, camilerin bej ve gri taşlarına karşı inanılmaz bir kontrast oluşturur.

Suya doğru ilerlediğimizde atmosfer tamamen değişir. Ortaköy, Bebek ve Arnavutköy’ü kapsayan Boğaz hattı, İstanbul’un “Riviera” yüzünü temsil eder. Burada enerji daha hafif, daha hızlı ve daha lükstür.
“Uçuşan” Dokular:
Boğaz, rüzgarla eş anlamlıdır. Bunu avantajınıza kullanın. İpek, şifon ve hafif saten kumaşlar burada en iyi dostlarınızdır. Arka planda bir vapur geçerken, deniz esintisinde dalgalanan bir elbisenin hareketini yakalamayı çok seviyorum. Honeymoon Shoots
Renk Paleti:
Beyaz, Boğaz’ın tartışmasız hükümdarıdır. Beyaz bir yazlık elbise, denizin derin mavisi ve yalıların sıcak kahverengi ahşap dokusuyla çarpıcı bir kontrast oluşturur. Bu renk “balayı” diye haykırır. Eğer beyaz tercihiniz değilse, pastel tonlara yönelin; toz pembe, bebek mavisi veya lavanta… Bu yumuşak renkler, suyun üzerine vuran sabah ışığıyla harika bir uyum sağlar.
Sahil İçin Günlük Şıklık:
Su kenarında daha rahat, bir “lifestyle” çekimi için “denizci şıklığını” (nautical chic) düşünün. Çizgili kayık yaka bir bluz, yüksek belli geniş paça bir pantolon ve bir hasır şapka, zahmetsizce bir moda dergisi edası yaratabilir. Galata ve Beyoğlu: Kentsel, Retro ve Asi
Şimdi tepelere, benim en sevdiğim oyun alanıma çıkıyoruz: Beyoğlu ve Galata Kulesi çevresi. Burası 19. yüzyılın sonlarının dokusuna sahip; Art Nouveau binalar, dar Arnavut kaldırımlı sokaklar, grafitiler, nostaljik tramvaylar ve vızıldayan kafeler.
Sokak Stili Zarafeti:
Burada risk alabilirsiniz. Galata için İstanbul stil rehberi önerim: “Retro Havalı.”

Bunu ne kadar vurgulasam azdır: Yüksek topuklular İstanbul’un Arnavut kaldırımlarında bir kabustur. Eğer fotoğraf için stiletto giymek istiyorsanız, onları bir çantada getirin ve çekim noktaları arasında yürürken rahat düz ayakkabılar giyin. Burkulmuş ayak bilekleri yüzünden yarıda kalan çok fazla çekim gördüm. Balat: Renk Patlaması
Eğer renkli İstanbul elbise stili deneyimini sonuna kadar yaşamak istiyorsanız, Balat sizin tuvalinizdir. Bu mahalle, gökkuşağı renkli evleri ve dik yokuşlarıyla ünlüdür.
Kontrast Her Şeydir:
Arka plan bu kadar hareketli ve renkli olduğu için önünüzde iki seçenek var:
- Nötr Kalın: Arka plandan tamamen ayrışmak için beyaz, krem veya bej giyin. Bu, dikkati boyalı evlere değil, doğrudan size çeker.

Teras Çekimleri: “Uçan Elbise”
Onları Instagram’da mutlaka görmüşsünüzdür. Arkada martıların uçtuğu ve tüm şehrin ayaklarınızın altına serildiği o meşhur teras çekimleri… Birçok danışanım özellikle bunu istiyor.
Bu çekimler için genellikle “Uçan Elbise” (Flying Dress) etkisi yaratacak kıyafetler seçiyoruz. Bunlar genellikle inanılmaz uzun kuyruklu (bazen 3-4 metre) saten elbiselerdir. Rüzgarı yakalamak veya bir asistan tarafından havaya fırlatılmak üzere tasarlanmışlardır. Honeymoon Shoots
Bir teras çekiminde ne giyilir? Burada canlı ve düz renkler tartışmaya kapalıdır. Parlak Kırmızı, Kanarya Sarısı veya Fuşya… Neden mi? Çünkü gri gökyüzü, mavi deniz ve kahverengi çatılarla rekabet ediyorsunuz. Puslu havayı delip geçen ve dikkatleri üzerine çeken bir renge ihtiyacınız var. Burası sade desenlerin yeri değil; burası yüksek moda dramasının merkezidir.
Mevsimsel Detaylar: Kış vs. Yaz
İstanbul yılın 365 günü güzeldir ancak gardırobunuzun mevsime uyum sağlaması gerekir.
- Yaz (Haziran – Eylül): Hava sıcak ve nemli olabilir. Sentetik kumaşlar sizi terletir ve vücudunuza yapışır; bu da yüksek çözünürlüklü yakın çekimlerde hoş görünmez. - Bahar (Nisan-Mayıs & Ekim-Kasım): Fotoğrafçılık için en iyi mevsimler. Işık daha yumuşaktır. Katmanlı giyinmek en büyük dostunuzdur. Bir trençkot, İstanbul için ikonik bir görünümdür. Hem sofistike bir hava katar hem de tüm kıyafetinizi değiştirmeden iki farklı görünüm (ceketli/ceketsiz) elde etmemizi sağlar. Honeymoon Shoots
- Kış (Aralık – Mart): Soğuğa ince bir elbiseyle direnmeye çalışmayın; fotoğraflarda mutsuz görünürsünüz. Kış modasını kucaklayın! Kaliteli bir yün palto, şık bir atkı ve deri eldivenler romantik, samimi bir “Love Story” havası yaratır. Yağmurda bir şemsiyenin altında el ele yürümek, hayatınızın en romantik karesi olabilir.
Kumaş Psikolojisi: Kamera Neyi Sever?
Bir fotoğrafçı olarak ışığın kumaşla nasıl etkileşime girdiğine bakarım:
- Kadife: Işığı emer. Zengin ve asil görünür; Pera’daki kış akşamı çekimleri için harikadır.
- Saten/İpek: Işığı yansıtır. Kıvrımları ve hareketi vurgular. Altın saat çekimleri için kusursuzdur.
- Dantel: Hacim eklemeden doku ve derinlik katar. Çok “gelinsi” ve romantiktir. Honeymoon Shoots
- Tül: Rüya gibi, puslu bir kalite yaratır. Masalsı konseptler için idealdir.
Kaçınmanız Gerekenler:
- Küçük, karmaşık desenler: İnce kareli desenler veya çok sık çizgiler dijital kameralarda “moiré etkisi” (garip, dalgalı bir görüntü) yaratabilir.
- Dev Logolar: Lütfen göğsünüzde devasa marka logoları olmasın. Bu, fotoğrafın tarihini eskitir ve sizi bir reklam panosu gibi gösterir. Biz bir moda markasına değil, sizin duygularınıza odaklanmak istiyoruz.

Sıklıkla gelinin bir tanrıça gibi göründüğü, damadın ise sanki iş toplantısından yeni çıkmış veya spor salonundan gelmiş gibi durduğu çekimlere rastlıyorum. Beyler, bu sizin de anınız.
Üzerinize oturması (fit) her şeydir. Üzerinize tam oturan uygun fiyatlı bir takım elbise, iki beden büyük gelen özel dikim bir Armani’den çok daha iyi görünür. “Uyumlu olun, aynı olmayın.” Onun elbisesiyle tıpatıp aynı renkte bir kravat takmanıza gerek yok; bu 2005 yılındaki lise mezuniyet fotoğraflarını anımsatır. Bunun yerine tamamlayıcı renkler bulun. Eğer o sıcak tonlarda çiçekli bir elbise giyiyorsa, siz sıcak kahverengi bir ceket giyin. Eğer o soğuk maviler içindeyse, siz gri veya antrasit bir takıma yönelin.
Saç, Makyaj ve Son Dokunuş
“İstanbul Görünümü” doğal ihtişamdır. Ağır, kalıp gibi duran makyajlar parlak Akdeniz güneşi altında sert görünebilir.
Saç: Rüzgarı hatırlıyor musunuz? Eğer uzun saçlarınız varsa, etrafta uçuşmasına hazırlıklı olun. Ben dağınık, rüzgarın savurduğu saçları seviyorum; yaşayan bir görüntü veriyor. Ama kusursuz olsun istiyorsanız, bolca saç spreyi kullanın veya ensenizi açıkta bırakan zarif bir topuz yapın. Honeymoon Shoots
Makyaj: Nem nedeniyle mat fondötenler genellikle daha iyidir. Belirgin bir dudak rengi (kırmızı veya bordo) fotoğraflarda harika durur çünkü dikkati gülümsemenize çeker.
Taşıyabileceğiniz en güzel kıyafet, özgüveninizdir. Basit bir jean ve tişörtle film yıldızı gibi görünen çiftler çektim çünkü rahattılar. En şık kıyafetleri seçin ama o kıyafetin içinde “kendiniz” olun. Eğer elbiselerden nefret ediyorsanız, şık bir takım giyin. Eğer takımlardan nefret ediyorsanız, temiz ve koyu renkli bir balıkçı yaka kazak tercih edin. İyi hissettiğinizde daha dik durur, daha içten gülümser ve gözlerinizle parlarsınız. Benim yakaladığım şey tam olarak budur.
